Travel Style

Safari

Safari means journey in Swahili. Ours are led by guides who have spent years in these parks, at a pace that leaves time to watch.

With Africa Keys

Your guide is the most important part of a safari. Ours are certified, they know the country and its wildlife, and many have been with Africa Keys for more than a decade.

Your guide drives, spots and explains. You travel in a safari Landcruiser or minibus with a roof hatch for game viewing, a radio, a cool box and a first aid kit. Guides who speak other languages can be arranged.

Where you stay, how long you spend in each place and how you move between them are decided with you. Some travellers want two parks and long mornings. Others want to cover ground. Both are a safari.

Highlights

What it can hold.

The Great Migration

Samburu’s Special Five

Reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx, gerenuk and kudu.

Chobe by river

One of the largest elephant populations in Africa, seen from the water.

Tree-climbing lions

Lake Manyara, on the way to Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.

On foot

Walking safaris in the quieter reserves of southern Tanzania.

The hours between

Sundowners, bush breakfasts and what your guide tells you on the drive.

Where

The countries for it.

Kenya

The Mara, Amboseli, Samburu, Laikipia and the coast

Tanzania

Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar

Uganda

Mountain gorillas, Murchison Falls and the source of the Nile

South Africa

Kruger, Cape Town, the Winelands and the Garden Route

Botswana

Who it suits

First safari or fifth. Families with children, couples, friends travelling together and people returning for a part of Africa they have not yet seen.

Good to know

Drives start early and roads in the parks are rough. Light aircraft allow 15 kg of luggage in soft bags. Neutral colours are best on safari; bright ones are fine at the coast.

“

Our guide was fantastic: knowledgeable, passionate about wildlife, funny, friendly and a great spotter of animals. Even long drives between hotels ended up being lots of fun, and we learned a lot about Kenyan culture and history.
